| "British
Game Fowl" by Ian Kay |
"British
Game Fowl" by Ian Kay covers the history and development
of Game Fowl in the UK. From the birds
brought to these shores by the Romans and Phoenicians, early cockfighting
and Game Fowl Clubs, through to the current exhibition breeds
of Modern, Cornish/Indian, Oxford and Carlisle Game. We also have
a look at Game in Australia.
With
over 35,000 words, supported by nearly 300 colour and sepia photographs,
many of these from the 1930s that have never been published before,
British Game Fowl is not just historical, it is Heritage, which
will appeal to both new and experienced breeders and exhibitors,
providing tips on exhibition and breeding pens.
Not only will you enjoy reading the content, you will be able
to admire the wonderful photographs, probably for many, many years
to come.

Reviews
of British Game Fowl by Ian Kay:
"Most Excellent Book...
Ian Kay's book 'Stairway to the Breeds', published in 1997 was regarded
by many as one of the finest poultry books ever published - this
one, 'British Game Fowl', is in my view, certainly its equal.
As someone who began my showing career in 1947 with Old English
Game Spangle bantams before switching to Soft-feather, I have over
the past near 50 years, always been an admirer of Game Fowl though
not a breeder of them.
Having read this most excellent book I can only describe it in one
word "FASCINATING". It covers everything its title states
- History, Characters of bygone days, current exhibitors, show &
standards of Large Game, Game bantams, Indian/Cornish Game and Modern
Game. Furthermore, it is supported by a wealth of QULAITY PHOTOGRAPHS
rarely seen.
I congratulate Ian, (incidentally no relation) on this superb book
and I enthusiastically commend it to you.
David Kay - Leading Poultry Exhibitor, Breeder, and Judge"
"Passion for Game Fowl
My overall impression is that Ian Kay produced this book to indulge
his own passion for Game Fowl, particularly the Oxford type, but
in so doing has provided we fanciers with invaluable insights into
all breeds of British Game Fowl, well supported by photographs,
articles and anecdotes.
I
particularly liked his use of the Rice photographs, well he would,
wouldn't he, which allows comparison of birds of the 1930's with
present day birds, where certainly in the case of the Oxford and
Modern Game, there are no obvious differences between the birds
shown in photographs taken 70 odd years apart. The text is also
enjoyable being full of anecdotes and articles on the personalities
within the breeds, and the strains or individual birds they bred
or developed.
Overall,
an enjoyable book that will be well appreciated by all of us of
like persuasion, or even with just a passing interest in Game
Fowl.

"Another Excellent Poultry Book
Another excellent poultry book from the Kay household, as you
would expect from the author, it is well researched and written,
giving in-depth insight into the world of gamefowl, from their
earliest origins to todays bird.
Each section is full of information and provides a fascinating
insight on the bird, which will prove invaluable to the experienced
breeder or the backyard hobbyist alike.
But not only is this a well written book on gamefowl their origins,
improvement and development into todays birds, it is full of photographs
both in black and white showing the early birds of yester-year
in all their glory, but also lots of colour photos too, of todays
top winning birds from the countrys leading shows, the photos
and text are blended well to give a pictorial description of each
type of bird that accompanies the text well.
It has been a pleasure to be asked to contribute photographs too
this book, which in my opinion is a must for all game enthusiasts.

"Thoroughly
Recommended
I read this book with great pleasure. One thing that the author
Ian Kay can always be relied upon is that his research on a given
subject will be factual and meticulous and well laid out.
This book will be of value to both novice and experienced game
fowl breeders alike, as there is much of interest to be found
between its covers and it is very well illustrated throughout.
I especially liked the A4 format that the book is presented in,
making the text easy to read and the many photographs simple to
study and compare. I thoroughly recommended it.
